Context

Western Sussex Rivers Trust, (formerly the Arun & Rother Rivers Trust) cares for rivers and streams running over 350,000 acres of countryside in Southern Britain.

In 2023 they came to Wayforward to help them find a new name as Arun and Rother Rivers Trust did not accurately convey the area they covered and could lead to confusion (a second  River Rother is also located in Sussex!)

Developing an new identity

With expertise in organisational development, stakeholder engagement and fundraising, Wayforward facilitated the early development of Sussex Bay in 2021, going on to become architects alongside founder Paul Brewer, Director for Sustainability & Resources at Adur & Worthing Councils.

By November 2023, Sussex Bay was its own entity, with seed-funding secured, ready to recruit its first full-time staff member. In June 2024 it launched to the public with a high profile event at the Brighton Corn Exchange.

”Thank you to the fantastic folk at Wayforward, who were instrumental in making Sussex Bay real, fundable and launch-ready – and who served as our Steering Group in the early years.”

Aimee Felus, Chief Executive, Western Sussex Rivers Trust

Vision, branding and website

Wayforward ran a naming process with core team and trustees to develop and get buy in for a new name. Creative workshops with core team supported the development of a new look and feel.

•Developed a new brand identity (by Studio Kico):

•Publicity materials.

•Additionally, we ran a survey to glean community views on the health of the River Ems chalk stream.

Fundraising Workshops

From early workshops and webinars to high profile public launch

Wayforward's initial engagement with Sussex Bay was a workshop exploring the Sussex Bay vision with key sector leaders....

Community research

Surveying river users

The River Ems is a rare chalk stream, one of only 260 in the world. 85% of all chalk streams are found in the South of England. Their rarity means they are of global importance.

An online survey was created to canvass the views of over 200 local people about the River Ems to help inform a 10 year Chalk Stream Restoration Plan.
